DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull out an 8-4 win in the opener, then hammered out a 9-1 five-inning victory in the nightcap as the Bruins swept Grand View University Wednesday afternoon in nonconference action at Luhrs Complex.

The Bruins improved to 27-14 on the season with the sweep. Grand View fell to 20-27 overall.

GAME 1
After two ground outs to start the eighth inning, the Bruins erupted for five-straight hits, scoring four runs to pull out the 8-4 win in the opener.

The Vikings took an early 1-0 lead, scoring off a wild pitch from Bruin starter Alissa Crumley. Bellevue tied it up at 1-1 in the second, following a single by Allie Bartley, a Katie Lefler walk, and an error by GVU third baseman Whitney Link.

BU took its first lead in the top of the third when Kim Wees led off the inning with her first career home run. The Vikings quickly responded in the bottom of the third, regaining the lead, plating two runs following an RBI double by Lauren Vitiello and a sac bunt RBI by Link.

The Bruins answered in the top of the fifth off a two-run double by Jenny Gawart to give the Bruins a 4-3 advantage. GVU tied it up in the bottom of the sixth frame, scoring an unearned run following an error by center fielder Erica McCoy.

Bellevue's eighth-inning magic was highlighted by a two-run single by McCoy, an RBI double by Jessica Guyle and an RBI single by Wees.

Wees finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs. McCoy went 1-for-4 with three RBIs.

Senior Aly Bowers picked up the win, throwing two hitless innings of relief while striking out four batters.

GAME 2
The Bruins pounded out 13 hits, scoring eight runs in the second and third innings, to cruise to the 9-1 five-inning victory in the nightcap. Lefler finished 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs. Wees finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Gawart went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Bowers also picked up the win in the second game, allowing just two hits while fanning eight batters to improve to 7-5 on the season.

A two-run homer by Gawart keyed a three-run second inning for the Bruins. BU scored five runs in the third on a two-run shot by Lefler, an RBI double by Guyle, an RBI single by Wees, and a one-run single by Kendra Gansz.

The Bruins made it 9-0 in the fifth frame following an RBI single by Bartley. The Vikings scored their lone run on a two-out solo homer by Amanda Busch in the bottom of the fifth.
