Bruins drop doubleheader at William Penn

OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team was swept in a nonconference doubleheader Saturday at William Penn, falling 4-1 and 4-0 to drop to 24-13 on the season. The Statesmen, who received votes in the latest NAIA national poll, improved to 33-10.

GAME 1
After tying the game with a solo homer by Nikki Sedlak in the top of the seventh inning, the Bruins gave up a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom half of the inning, as the Statesmen pulled out the 4-1 win in the opener.

Bellevue managed just two hits in the contest. Senior Alissa Crumley took the loss, scattering seven hits while recording nine strikeouts.

WPU scored on a Bruin fielding error in the bottom of the first inning. Neither team scored again until Sedlak's seventh-inning bomb.

Crumley gave up a double and a walk in the bottom of the seventh before Krystina Lorah's three-run homer ended the game.

GAME 2
Hannah Lugar tossed a three-hitter to shut out the Bruins, 4-0, in the nightcap.

Bellevue mounted its only threat in the third inning when singles by Katie Lefler and Erica McCoy put runners in scoring position at first and third. However, Lugar forced Jessica Guyle into a double play to end the threat.

Crumley took the loss, giving up four runs in 2.1 innings while striking out two batters and allowing three walks. Aly Bowers, who relieved Crumley in the third inning, allowed just one hit while fanning six batters in 3.2 innings of work.

The Bruins return home on Monday (April 19) for a 4 p.m. doubleheader with Hastings College beginning at 4 p.m. at Haworth Park. The Bruins eight seniors will be honored in between games.
