Bruins gain split at Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- After dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker in the opening game, the Bellevue University softball team erupted for 19 hits in a 19-1 win in the nightcap to gain a non-conference doubleheader split.

The Bruins are 24-11 on the season and will travel to Oscaloosa, Iowa on Saturday (April17) for a 12 p.m. doubleheader at William Penn.

GAME 1
A walk-off grand slam by Kara Harris with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Tigers the dramatic 4-3 victory in the opener.

After recording the first out of the seventh frame, Bruin starter Allie Bartley gave up consecutive singles and was replaced by Alissa Crumley who allowed a walk and then the grand slam to Harris to take the loss.

The Bruins took an early 2-0 in the top of the first after a two-run single by Brooke Ellis. An RBI single by Kim Wees pushed the Bruin lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh.

Crumley fell to 15-3 on the season with the loss.

GAME 2
The Bruin bats came alive in the nightcap as six Bruins recorded multiple hits in the 19-1 victory. Katie Lefler highlighted the BU offense with two home runs and seven RBIs.

Jessica Guyle collected four hits, while Lefler, Brooke Ellis, and Erica McCoy each had three hits in the contest. Ellis finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs, two doubles, and three runs scored.

Bellevue scored 10 runs in the first two innings, highlighted by Lefler's first-inning grand slam. Seven Bruins collected hits as Bellevue batted through the lineup in the five-run second inning.

After the Tigers clawed back with one tally in the bottom of the second, the Bruins added two more scores in the third on RBIs by Ellis and Bartley.

A three-run homer by Lefler keyed Bellevue's six-run fourth inning.

Guyle's RBI double in the top of the fifth frame completed the game's scoring.

Kimber Markley picked up the win, improving to 5-3 on the season, scattering four hits with one strikeout and one walk in three innings of work. Senior pitcher Aly Bowers returned to action for the first time since suffering a knee injury on Mar. 26. She threw two innings of hitless relief.
