BU blanks Flames in home-opening doubleheader

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- After 19-straight road games to open the 2010 campaign, the Bellevue University softball team recorded a pair of home shutouts, blanking MCAC foe College of St. Mary 6-0 and 15-0 Wednesday afternoon at Haworth Park.

With the sweep, the Bruins improved to 13-8 on the season and 2-0 in the MCAC. College of St. Mary fell to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in league play.

GAME 1
Jessica Guyle, Kendra Gansz, and Kara Erwin combined for seven hits and five RBIs to back up the two-hit pitching effort of Alissa Crumley as the Bruins recorded the 6-0 shutout in the opener.

Bellevue took an early 1-0 lead in the first after Guyle led off the inning with a double to left center field, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Wees and came home on a sacrifice fly to left field by Gansz.

The Bruins increased the lead to 2-0 following a sacrifice fly by Erica McCoy that plated pinch runner Rachel Allen in the bottom of the second inning.

An RBI single by Jenny Gawart to left field scored Gansz who reached on a double to give Bellevue a 3-0 lead in the third.

Guyle's two-run single in the fourth frame gave BU a 5-0 lead. Gansz' second double plated Guyle to make it 6-0.

Crumley improved to 5-2 on the season while striking out seven Flame batters and allowing no walks to get her first shutout of the season.

GAME 2
The Bruins scored 15 runs on 12 hits while notching the 15-0 shutout in the nightcap. It marked Bellevue's fourth-straight win of the season.

BU took advantage of six walks by Bruin pitcher Megan O'Hara and three fielding errors by the Flames.

McCoy finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. Brooke Ellis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Guyle plated three runs while going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Crumley picked up the win, retiring all six batters she faced as Bellevue used three pitchers in the contest.
