Bruins split to open 2010 season

CONWAY, Ark. -- The Bellevue University softball team opened the 2010 season by splitting a pair of games at the Central Baptist College February Meltdown Friday afternoon. Bellevue opened the tournament with an 11-2 win over Baker University before being shut out by William Jewell College, 2-0 in the nightcap.

The Bruins blasted three home runs in the opener, including a grand slam by sophomore Erica McCoy that ended the game in the sixth inning. Senior Kendra Gansz and sophomore Brooke Ellis ripped back-to-back homers in the bottom of the third inning.

Senior Alissa Crumley picked up the win for the Bruins which was head coach Michala Cimino's first collegiate victory.

William Jewell's Amanda Storm held the Bruins to one hit and Megan Watkins recorded two RBIs and the Cardinal's only two hits as WJC shut out BU, 2-0, in the second game.

Watkins collected a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning and a bloop single in the bottom of the fourth as senior Aly Bowers registered the loss for Bellevue.

The Bruins continue action at the the tournament on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against the host school Central Baptist College and a 4 p.m. contest against Central Methodist University.
