Bruins remain unbeaten in MCAC play
BELLEVUE, Neb. – Bellevue University softball got back on the winning track Friday evening with a sweep of Haskell Indian Nations University, 7-1 and 9-0 in six innings. The Bruins improve to 8-0 in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Bruins improved to 22-11 on the season and have won 15 of their last 17 games. Haskell Indian Nations University fell to 10-23 overall and winless in the league at 0-4.

The Bruins scored in five of six innings of game one to win 7-1 powered behind Erica McCoy’s first collegiate career homer in the sixth inning. It was a 2-run shot to left field. Bellevue took a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Amanda Martines scored. The Bruins went up 2-0 by the second and increased that lead to 3-0 after the fourth.

Game two and the bats came alive as the Bruins scored 7 of their 9 runs in the first three innings. Bellevue sent eight batters to plate in the third scoring three runs to put the game out of reach.

Kendra Gansz and Erica McCoy were perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 and 2-for-2 respectively in game one. Jenny Gawart has had a hot bat lately going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s hitting her fourth homer of the year. The Bruins pounded out 10 hits in game one, 3 of which came in the fifth inning. Nikki Sedlak was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI. Seven different batters scored for the Bruins.

Kady Revis led the Bruins in the second of the twin-bill going 4-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 RBI’s hitting her ninth double. Jordann Ellis was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s hitting her team-leading 11th homer. Kendra Gansz finished going 2-for-3 with a run and 2 RBI’s while Whitney Kinman added a pair of runs.

Kora Behrens went 6 1/3 innings in the first game scattering 3 hits allowing an unearned run. She had 12 strikeouts while Alissa Crumley pitched the final 2/3 innings. Behrens goes to 8-5 on the year and leads the team with 120 K’s. Aly Bowers pitched the complete second game recording the shutout allowing 7 hits. She faced 25 batters and registered 6 strikeouts. Bowers becomes the first Bruin to win 10 games this season (10-3).

The Fightin’ Indians had four hits in game one, all from different batters. Kylee Nilges scored the only run on a Rachel Thompson (1-for-3) RBI in the seventh. Nilges continued her hot hitting with a double in the second game going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. The Haskell 1-4 hitters all registered singles with the exception of Myriah Harris who was 1-for-3 hitting a double.

Ashley Consedine pitched 5 innings allowing 5 runs, 3 earned, on 9 hits for the loss in game one. Consedine had a walk and one strikeout. Nicole Macias pitched the final inning of relief giving up 2 runs on a single hit, a homer to Bellevue’s Jordan Ellis. Nicole Bennett had the game two set-back allowing 7 runs on 5 hits. She walked 5 and finished with 2 strikeouts. Felisha Martin pitched 3 innings of relief allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.

Bellevue will close out their weekend conference series against Park University at 12 noon at Haworth Park in Bellevue. Both teams are undefeated in the league and a sweep by either team would all but solidify the host site of the MCAC tournament (Apr. 30-May 1).
