Last-minute PK lifts BU past Concordia

SEWARD, Neb. -- Matias Daniel-Doren netted his fourth game-winning goal of the season, burying a penalty kick with 35 seconds remaining to elevate the No. 7-ranked Bellevue University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Concordia University on Wednesday evening.

Bellevue continues their perfect start to the season, improving to 5-0-0 while CUNE slips to 1-1-2.

Jose-Miguel Boggio put Bellevue in front with the first shot of the game. Boggio took a pass from Matias Daniel-Doren, turned, and unleashed a left-footed missile from 20 yards for a 1-0 Bruin lead in the game's 18th minute.

Four minutes later, Concordia produced their first shot of the game. Ryan Wokutch received the ball near the penalty spot but his shot did not have much behind it and keeper Taariq Ganga came up with a stop for BU.

A reckless Bellevue challenge in the 30th minute saw CUNE earn a penalty kick. Martin Herrera stepped in for the spot kick and Ganga came up with the initial save but play continued and a free ball knock across the goal mouth by D'Andre Williams wound up connecting with Michael Wyvill's head as the Bulldogs equalized.

Jeremiah Hteh had an opportunity running at goal in the 41st minute. Boggio played Hteh in on goal who found himself one-on-one with the keeper but his shot off the outside of his foot missed wide into the side netting and the game remained level.

Concordia had a counterattack opportunity in the 55th minute with Wokutch taking a pass inside the box but his look toward an oncoming attacker was pounced on by Ganga to prevent a shot attempt.

The referee sent off Jarrod Henson in the 63rd minute with a straight red card as Concordia was forced to play a man down for the final 27:31 of the match.

Bellevue won a 68th minute free kick when an attacker was tripped up from behind giving the Bruins a free kick from inside of 30 yards. Giovani Lima Soares stepped to the ball to send in a delivery but he put a little too much on it and Nolan Fuelberth came off his line to prevent a shot by BU.

Fletcher Hedge delivered a quick touch-pass to Edwin Cisneros outside the 18 in the 74th minute that Cisneros ran onto and hit a volley on target that Fuelberth punched away for a corner.

Pressure continued to mount with the Bruins winning another free kick 90 seconds later, this from 25 yards but Boggio's effort curled over the crossbar. Another free kick a couple minutes later saw Hteh get his head to a service but his redirect went wide of goal.

Bellevue saw another chance in the 87th minute when Jake Cover tipped a ball over a defender to himself in the box but Hteh saw his shot blocked.

With 39 seconds left, Bellevue was on the favorable end of a PK decision. Cover switched the ball across the field to a streaking Cisneros who was taken down in the box for a penalty. Daniel-Doren stepped to the spot and beat Fuelberth with the winner.

The Bruins out-shot Concordia 13-4 on the night and 4-3 on goal as Ganga and Fuelberth each made a pair of saves.

Bellevue returns home on Saturday, Sept. 7 when they welcome Morningside University to Papillion Landing for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
