Furious second half rally gives Bruins come-from-behind win

McPHERSON, Kan. -- On the strength of an 89th minute equalizer, the No. 17 Bellevue University extended the match long enough for Jonas Starkus to score in the 106th minute to lead the Bruins to a 3-2 double overtime victory over John Brown University on Friday morning in their first game at the Red Card Cancer Classic, hosted by McPherson.

With the win, Bellevue snaps a four-game skid and sees their record improve to 2-4-1 while John Brown suffers their first loss to fall to 3-1-0 on the season.

Following a corner kick Starkus completed the BU come-from-behind rally to score his third-career game-winning goal in the 106th minute with the assist credited to Scott Robson - his second of the match. The others both came last year against Viterbo and USAO with the latter taking place in the NAIA Opening Round.

Kelvin Omondi staked JBU to a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, scoring off a corner kick. The goal was the fourth of the season by Omondi. Santiago Vanegas was credited with an assist.

In the 54th minute, Ryan Williams doubled the Golden Eagle's advantage to 2-0 with a goal off of a rebound. The goal was Williams' third of the season.

Starkus, making his first appearance since the season-opener, scored in the 75th minute to pull Bellevue to within a goal at 2-1. Following a BU corner kick, Finlay Bloodworth fired a shot that Starkus collected on the rebound and put back into the net for his first goal.

The Bruins leveled the score in the 89th minute when Robson's pass connected with Bloodworth's head and found its way into the back of the net.

Ben Martin stopped 10 shots in goal for the Bruins who were out-shot as a team, 21-11 (12-8 on goal). John Brown's Adam Holt made five saves for the Golden Eagles.

Prior to the game JBU had conceded just one goal in their first three games combined.

Tomorrow's scheduled game between Bellevue University and McPherson College has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. The change is due to last night's inclement weather forcing BU's match against John Brown to be abandoned and replayed this morning.
