
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The Bellevue University men's soccer team rallied from a halftime deficit but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 2-1 in overtime to host Westminster College on Sunday afternoon.
Westminster's Ivan Lezama Mendoza scored a penalty kick goal in the 98th minute to send Westminster to victory. The Bruins were whistled for a yellow card foul inside their own 18-yard box with under three minutes to play to give the Griffins the opportunity for a game-winner.
Westminster struck first with a 45th minute goal from Matthew Warne. Warne deflected a clearance attempt into goal inside the final minute of play in the opening half for the 1-0 Griffin advantage.
Sophomore Daniel Coupland equalized for the Bruins in the 55th minute with his first career strike in a BU uniform. Coupland sent a strike inside the left post from inside the penalty area off passes from senior Jamie Henderson and sophomore Jacob Pease to pull Bellevue level at 1-1.
For the match Bellevue dominated the score sheet with substantial edges in shots (18-7), shots on goal (8-3), corners (8-4), and offsides (4-1).
Bellevue played the final nine minutes of the match shorthanded after having a player sent off in the waning minutes of regulation.
Bellevue (3-1-1) returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 10 with a 7 p.m. match at Concordia.
