Bruins secure first tournament win of season

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Cayden Wynne took the individual title by eight strokes to lead the Bellevue University men's golf team to their first tournament title of the season in Wednesday's final round of the Midwest Spring National Invite.

BU secured a 19-stroke victory at the 13-team Midwest Spring National Invite being played at the 7,049-yard, par 72 Colbert Hills Golf Course.

Bellevue fired a 15-over 303 to finish with a team total of 875, good for 11-over par. Hastings College was second at 30-over, shooting a third round best 9-over 297. Northwestern (+32), Grand View (+34), and No. 5-ranked Friends (+35) rounded out the top five.

Wynne carded an even-par final round to finish the tournament with 7-under 209 (70-67-72). He shot a 1-under front nine with a birdie on No. 3 (370-yard, par 4) and sinking birdies on No. 13 (344-yard, par 4) and No. 16 (495-yard, par 5) on the back.

Hastings' Henry Kosmicki produced a 1-over final round after beginning the day in fourth place, as he moved up to second, finishing eight strokes back of Wynne.

Dylan Rodgers and Totte Uhlan were among five golfers tied for seventh overall. Rodgers' 4-over 76 saw him finish at 6-over (222). He registered his lone birdie of the day on the 576-yard, par 5 first hole, supplementing his round with 12 pars. Uhlan shot an even-par final round to move up nine spots on the leaderboard. He finished with a trio of birdies, making them on No. 5 (177-yard, par 3), No. 11 (201-yard, par 3), and No. 16.

Thomas Gatlin shot 11-over on the day to finish in a tie for 12th at 8-over (224). His round was highlighted by a birdie on the 559-yard, par 5 seventh hole.

Kyle Dale matched Gatlin with an 11-over final round of his own. He tied for 44th overall, shooting 20-over (236) for the tournament. He made birdies on No. 2 (374-yard, par 4) and No. 15 (365-yard, par 4).

The Bruins return to the links on Monday-Tuesday, Apr. 28-29 when they host the final two rounds of the North Star Athletic Association Championship at Woodland Hills Golf Club in Eagle, Neb. The first two rounds were played in the fall at CrossRoads Golf Club in Carrington, N.D. The Bruins enter the third and fourth rounds with an 18-stroke advantage over second place University of Jamestown.
