
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- The Bellevue University men's golf team is currently in seventh place after the opening round of play at the 13-team Whistling Straits Championship being played at the 6,924-yard, par-72 Whistling Straits Golf Course. The Bruins shot a team score of 28-over par (316).
Bellevue is within striking distance as Taylor University leads the field at 18-over par (306).
Thomas Gatlin was the top Bruin golfer on the day, finishing with a 2-over par 74. He is in a tie for 4th place. Gatlin had three birdies and 10 pars in his opening round.
Cayden Wynne fired a 6-over 78. Four birdies and six pars highlighted his round. Wynne is currently tied for 15th place in the 67-player field.
Kyle Dale finished at 8-over par in the first round and is in a tie for 26th place. His round was sparked by one birdie and 11 pars.
Randy Christiansen collected three birdies and six pars in the opening round, finishing at 12-over par, putting him in a tie for 42nd place.
Dylan Rodgers registered a 14-over 86 and is tied for 50th place. He had one birdie and nine pars on the day.
Wisconsin-Parkside's Hayden Underhill is the individual leader at 3-under par. He, along with Iowa Central's Eric Zuniga (-1), were the only two players to turn in sub-par rounds on Monday.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
