LEMONT, Ill. -- The Bellevue University men's golf team finished one stroke out of second and two strokes out of first place, maintaining their opening-round standing of third place after the final round of play at the 17-team Flyer Intercollegiate played at the 7,078-yard, par-72 Cog Hill Golf and Country Club.
The Bruins shot the best team score of the day, finishing with a 14-over par 302 in Tuesday's second round. BU finished at 29-over par for the tournament. NCAA Division III Aurora University captured the team title at 27-over par, with rounds of 300 and 303. NCAA Division II Wisconsin-Parkside was one stroke behind at 28-over par. After firing a 4-over 292 in the opening round, UWP faltered with a 24-over par 312 in the second round.
Thomas Gatlin made one of the biggest leaps of the day, jumping 29 spots into a tie for ninth place after shooting a 1-over 73 to go with Monday's 6-over 78 to finish at 7-over for the tournament. Four birdies and eight pars highlighted Gatlin's round, which tied for the best round of the day among all participants.
Opening-round leader Cayden Wynne was the top overall finisher for the Bruins, placing second in the 96-player field at 2-over par with rounds of 71 and 75. Two birdies and an eagle on the 495-yard, par-5 fifth hole sparked his second round.
UW-Parkside's Andrew Conrad won the individual title at 1-over par (72-73).
Kyle Dale moved up 30 spots into a tie for 36th place after shooting a 4-over 76, combined with Monday's 10-over 82, to go 14-over for the tournament. Dale had four birdies on the day, including three on the back nine, where he fired a 1-under 35.
Dylan Rodgers finished in a tie for ninth place after shooting a 6-over 78 to put him at 7-over for the tournament. His round was highlighted by collecting one birdie and 11 pars.
Rounding out the day for the Bruins was Randy Christiansen, who posted a 13-over 85, putting him at 22-over for the tournament and in 73rd place.
The Bruins will travel to Sheboygan, Wis. on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 14-15, to compete in the Whistling Straits Championship.
