Oosterhof, Becerra lead Bruins to title at Maverick Invitational

ELKHORN, Neb. -- Floris-Jan Oosterhof won a two-hole playoff with teammate Andre Becerra, who shot a tournament-best 5-under in the third round, as the Bruin teammates led the Bellevue University men's golf team to a first place finish at the Maverick Invitational.

Bellevue (+6, 870) rode a 4-under final round to pull away from North Dakota State (+27, 891) and secure the team title at the Maverick Invitational.

The Bruins began the day 11 strokes ahead and grew that lead to 13 after the second round wrapped up. BU, who had three of the top four finishers, closed the tournament in convincing fashion, shooting a tournament-best 4-under as a team in the third round to secure the victory.

Morningside (+29, 893), host UNO (+47, 911), and Midland (+58, 922) rounded out the top five. Bellevue's "B" team finished in sixth place in the 10-team field (two did not finish) with a score of 947 (+83).

The first 27 holes of the tournament were played Monday with the final 27 coming today.

Individual Recap:

Bruin teammates Andre Becerra and Floris-Jan Oosterhof tied for first place at 1-over (217) through regulation play. Becerra recorded a tournament-best 5-under 67 in Tuesday's final round to rally back into contention after posting a 6-over mark through 36 holes. Overall, Becerra banked seven birdies in the third round including a stretch where he sank birdies on four of five holes (13-14, 16-17) to force a playoff with Oosterhof. Oosterhof, began the day at 2-under and shot 2-over for the second half of the second round and a 1-over 73 in the third round.

Oosterhof eventually took home medalist honors, winning a two-hole playoff with Becerra by parring the second hole of the playoff.

Rodrigo Navarrete (+3, 219), who began the day in the lead, turned in a 40 for the second nine in round two before rebounding to card a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish tied for third with Morningside's Sam Storey.

Alex Zillig (+7) and Hugo Ronnberg (+8) finished tied for ninth and 11th, respectively, to round out the Bruin lineup. Zillig recorded a 39 to close out round two and a 2-over 74 in the third round while Ronnberg, after shooting 40 to finish his second round, finished strong as he posted a 2-under 70 to close out the event.

Baptiste Bonnet (15th), Cameron Lampe (t-25th), Lucas Leinen (t-34th), and Evan Macke (t-34th) comprised the Bellevue "B". Bonnet (+11) and Lampe (+18) each turned in their best rounds, 73 (+1) and 76 (+4), of the tournament in the finale while Macke (+27) and Leinen (+27) each produced better results in the second and third rounds than in their openers.

Bellevue wraps up the fall portion of their 2020-21 schedule next week at the Grand View University Invitational. The Tournament is set for Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 19-20 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa.
