Bruins comfortably ahead after first day of Maverick Invitational

ELKHORN, Neb. -- The Bellevue University men's golf team, paced by Rodrigo Navarette, shot even par golf as a unit through 27 holes to find themselves 11 strokes ahead of the competition on Monday at the Maverick Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska Omaha at The Club at Indian Creek.

Team Recap:

Led by a 1-2 punch of Rodrigo Navarette and Floris-Jan Oosterhof that combined to shoot 5-under on the day, Bellevue built an 11-stroke lead over North Dakota State (+11) through 27 holes of play.

Morningside (+9) checks in at third as the Mustangs shot a solid 8-over in round one and followed up with a 1-over through half of round two. NDSU B (+17) and host UNO (+20) round out the top five while Bellevue's "B" (+47) group sits in eighth.

Individual Recap:

Navarette (-3) fired a 2-under 70 in the opening round and began round 2 by shooting 1-under through nine holes to stake himself to the lead through 27 holes.

Oosterhof sits a stroke back after also turning in a 2-under opening round and playing par golf through the first half of the second round. He is tied with Morningside's Sam Storey (72-34) in second place.

Bellevue's Alex Zillig (+2) is the third Bruin golfer with a top five performance on the day. He sits in a four-way tie for fifth place. Andre Becerra (+5) is tied for 11th after shooting 2-over in the first round and 3-over through nine in the second.

Hugo Ronnberg, the winner at the Nebraska Intercollegiate over the weekend, is tied for 17th at 6-over. He fired a 77 in the first round and a 1-over through nine holes in round two.

Golfing for the Bellevue "B" team are Cameron Lampe (+7, 22nd), Baptiste Bonnet (+8, t-23rd), Lucas Leinen (+15, t-36th), and Evan Macke (+17, t-41st).

Bellevue resumes play in the Maverick Invitational tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. with the second half of round two followed by the third, and final round of play.
