Bruin golf ties for second at Mid-South Classic

NEWTON, Kan. -- With three scoring golfers finishing in the top 12, the Bellevue University men's golf team tied for second place at the season-opening Mid-South Classic, hosted by Grand View University at Sand Creek Station.

The tournament's first two rounds were played Tuesday with the final round set for Wednesday, however, inclement weather prevented play from resuming and scores from Tuesday were deemed final.

Team Recap:

Morningside (605, +29) started strong with a first round team score of 300, four strokes ahead of Bellevue. The Mustangs shared low-scoring honors in round two with Wayland Baptist, with both teams shooting 305, to claim the team title by eight strokes.

BU and Wayland Baptist shared silver with cumulative team totals of 613 (+37), edging out Midland (615, +39) who finished fourth.

Individual Recap:

Floris-Jan Oosterhof put himself in strong position from the outset with a 1-over opening round. He followed that up with a second round 75 (+3) en route to a second place finish overall.

Morningside's Sam Storey (+2) took home the individual title. He carded the lone round below par, firing 1-under 71 in the first round before producing a 3-over 75 in round two.

Lucas Leinen, golfing as an individual, shaved three strokes off his first round score to generate a 3-over 75 second round, finishing the tournament tied for eighth place at 153 (+9).

Andre Becerra (73-81) and Alex Zillig (78-76) shared 11th place with two-round totals of 156 (+10).

Cameron Lampe (160, +16) and Rodrigo Navarette (160, +16) finished tied for 30th overall.

Up Next:

BU returns to play next week at the Southern Plains Intercollegiate, hosted by Oklahoma City University, at the Gaillardia Country Club. Monday will feature 36 holes of action with Tuesday providing the final 18 of the three-round tournament.
