Bruins fire low round, finish second at SCU Invite

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Andre Becerra and Juan Pablo Gomez both shot under par to lead the Bellevue University men's golf team to the best team round of the day and a second place finish at the Southwestern Christian University Invitational, played at the Lake Hefner Golf Course.

The tournament was held at the 6,970-yard, par-72 Lake Hefner Golf Course North in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Team Recap:

Kansas Wesleyan fired their second-straight under-par round to hold off the hard-charging Bruins for a three-stroke victory. The Coyotes scored a 2-under 286 for a two-day total of 568 (8-under) while Bellevue closed the gap with a 4-under 284 for a two-round score of 571 (5-under).

All four BU golfers shot par or better on the day, the only team to claim such a result in either round of the tournament.

A trio of Kansas Wesleyan golfers were under par while another was just 1-over.

Individual Recap:

Kansas Wesleyan's Troy Watson held tight to his first-round lead with a 1-under 71 to take individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 137, good for 7-under. He edged Taylor Morton (68-71—139) by two strokes.

Robbie Turner, of Southwestern Christian, fired the lowest round of the day with a 3-under 69 to jump from ninth place to finish in a tie for third with KWU's Ben Hadden.

Andre Becerra and Juan Pablo Gomez were each 1-under for Bellevue with second-round scores of 71 to join a four-way tie for ninth place overall at even par (144).

Also lowering their scores from yesterday to today were Lautaro Marzilio and Alex Zillig. Marzilio shaved eight strokes off his first round score by shooting a 2-under 70 and Zillig trimmed one stroke off his first round with a second round even-par 72.

Rodrigo Navarette, Bellevue's low scorer yesterday carded a 2-over 74 to finish in a tie for fifth place (142, 2-under).

Floris-Jan Oosterhof, golfing as an individual, joined Becerra and Gomez in a tie for ninth with a BU-best 2-under 70 round.

Bellevue will compete next at the NAIA Fall Preview at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kan. The 54-hole tournament will feature two rounds on Monday, Sept. 24 and a final round on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
