BU improves by 16 strokes in rain-shortened second round at Nationals

SILVIS, Ill. -- The Bellevue University men's golf team improved its opening-round team score by 16 strokes and moved up two spots in the overall standings to 23rd place after 36 holes of the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship, being played at the par-71, 6,651-yard TPC at Deere Run. 

Only 14 of the tournament's 29 teams completed play in the rain-plagued second round. The tournament's second round will resume at 7:30 a.m. Thursday before the third round begins later in the day. 

The Bruins shot a team score of 25-over par, 309, on Wednesday for a two-day team total of 634 (325-309).  

Nicolas Handal shot the Bruins' top round on the day, finishing with a 4-over-par 75. He is currently tied for 94th with a two-day total of 158 (83-75). Fernando Arzate fired a 5-over-par 76. He is currently tied for 84th in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 157 (81-76). Diego Gudino carded a 7-over 78 and is tied with Arzate with an identical 157 (79-78) total.

Andre Becerra rounded out the Bruin scoring on the day, finishing with a 9-over 80. He is tied for 117th with a two-round sum of 162 (82-80). 

Evan Holmes of British Columbia is the leader in the clubhouse at 4-over par for the tournament.

The top 17 teams and the top 40 individuals make the cut for Friday's final round.
