Men’s Golf earns fourth place finish at Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- On the strength of Fernando Arzate's sixth place finish the Bellevue University men's golf team battled to a fourth place finish in the tightly contested Wildcat Cup at the Brickyard, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.

After Monday's first round was postponed due to rain, team completed all 36 holes on Tuesday.

The event took place at Brickyard Crossing at the 6,994 yard, par 72 course.

Bellevue sat in a tie for third place following a 9-over first round as a team and finished in sole possession of fourth place with a 7-over second round. The Bruins' team score of 592 was just a stroke behind second place co-finishers Cumberlands and Taylor and four shots off the pace set by tournament champion Northwestern Ohio (588). Davenport and Mount Vernon Nazarene each shot 594 to round out the top five.

BU's top individual finisher, Arzate, traded a 1-over first round for a 1-under second round to finish as one of eight golfers to shoot par or better at the event. Charlie Phillips (MVNU) won the individual title on the strength of a 5-under second round to finish at 5-under 139.

Marc Juggins (74-74), Juan Gomez (73-76), and Diego Gudino (77-74) were each within three strokes of each other with scores of 148, 149, and 151, respectively. That trio placed in 17th, 21st, and 32nd-place ties individually.

Nicolas Handal improved six strokes from his first to his second round where he carded a 78. Tomas Ovejero shaved seven strokes off his opening round score to end the second round with a score of 81.

The Bruins are back on the links Monday and Tuesday, April 18-19 when they compete at the Grand View University Spring Invitational at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa.
