Bruins tied for lead after day one of Nebraska Intercollegiate Championships

NORFOLK, Neb. – Senior Jose Vega (Medellin, Colombia) is in a tie for second place after shooting an opening round 70 as the Bellevue University men's golf team sits in a tie for first place with Nebraska Wesleyan University after day one of the Nebraska Intercollegiate Championships.

Vega shot a 2-under par, one of only four players to record sub-par rounds, on the 6,812 yard, par 72. Sophomore Juan Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and junior Enrique Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) each shot an even par-72 and rest in a four-way tie for fifth place overall.

Sophomores Nicolas Handal (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Diego Gudino (Queretaro, Mexico) shot matching 78's in the first round to head into day two tied for 35th place in the field of 77.

Juniors Mike Hannon (Hastings, Neb.) and Tomas Ovejero (Salta, Argentina) are competing as individuals at the event. Hannon shot a first round 74 and Ovejero fired an 80 as the two rest in a tie for 13th and 47th place, respectively.

Bellevue and Nebraska Wesleyan each finished the opening round with scores of 292, two strokes ahead of Midland University. Hastings College (298) and the University of Nebraska-Kearney (299) rounded out the top five as the only other teams to shoot under 300 as a team.
