Bruins win UKY Bluegrass Showdown

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Bellevue University Overwatch 2 team rallied out of the loser's bracket to defeat Northeastern University in the Grand Finals of the University of Kentucky Bluegrass Showdown over the weekend.

Bellevue qualified as the third seed for the on-site Playoffs with a 5-2 record during regular-season play.

The first round pitted Bellevue against the University of Houston, whom they had previously defeated in the regular season, where the Bruins downed the Cougars 2-0 in their only Saturday match in Lexington.

Sunday began with the winner's bracket semifinals, Bellevue fell 2-0 to Northeastern University to fall into the loser's bracket. The Bruins won three-straight elimination games, defeating the University of Kentucky, Georgia Tech, and top-seeded Blinn College all by 2-0 margins to gain a rematch with Northeastern in the Grand Finals.

BU defeated Northeastern 3-0 in the Grand Finals to claim the tournament championship.

The team - comprised of Stone Nettles, Nick McCormick, Avery Hogue, Veronica Haggerty, Mark Kvashin, and Noah Haensel - went 5-1 on the weekend to finish the tournament at 10-3 overall.

Bellevue went 5-5 during the Kentucky Invite in the fall, effectively a warm-up event for this tournament. The Bruins are now 29-11 across all Overwatch 2 competitions this season.
