Ellwein nets 25th place finish in NECC Smash Ultimate Singles

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Josiah Ellwein "VC" won three playoff games to wrap up the NECC Smash Ultimate Singles tournament in 25th place.

Following a 4-2 regular season that wrapped up back in early November, VC entered the playoffs where he would open against highly ranked Fisher College.

Against Fisher, he matched up well, going neck-and-neck into a decisive fifth game where the final hit gave Fisher a 3-2 victory.

That loss dropped VC into the loser's bracket where he would win three-straight to continue his run. The first elimination match saw him square off against the University of Kentucky with the Wildcats grabbing a 2-1 lead. VC dropped his main character for the fourth game, where he trailed two stocks to one needing to capture two to force a fifth game. He was successful in that and went on to win the fifth game.

The next match pitted VC against the New England Institute of Technology. NEIT won the first game before back-to-back victories in games two and three gave VC a 2-1 lead. However, like the previous two matches, NEIT forced a decisive fifth but VC adapted and won convincingly to secure his spot in the top 33.

Last week, VC met with Augustana College and Sacramento State. He swept past the Vikings 3-0 before bowing out with a 3-0 loss to the Hornets.

Across three titles – League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bros. – Bellevue esports produced a 26-15 fall record, reaching the playoffs in each league in which they participated.
