Esports posts 5-0 week across three competitions

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Last week the Bellevue University Overwatch 2 and Super Smash Bros. teams combined to win five matches, going unbeaten across three competitions.

Bellevue began the week with a pair of victories in the University of Kentucky Overwatch 2 Invitational. The Bruins swept both Kennesaw State and Georgia Tech 2-0 to improve to 4-0 in that competition.

BU is in a three-way tie, along with Fisher and Illinois State, atop the standings at 4-0 with a +8 Map Differential. The Bruins face Fisher on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before meeting another 4-0 team, Missouri (+7), at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the Overwatch 2 team built upon their success earlier in the week by winning two more matches in the Overwatch Collegiate Homecoming Tournament. Bellevue swept Rutgers by scores of 2-1, 1-0 and 3-0 before taking a thrilling five-round match against Drexel. BU took the first two maps 2-0 and 3-2 before the Dragons responded winning maps three and four, 3-0 and 1-0, respectively. In the decisive fifth map, Bellevue edged out Drexel 3-2 to claim the match.

The team - comprised of Nick McCormick "Vita", Veronica Haggerty "Wicca", Mark Kvashin "Karova", Avery Hogue "AV2RY", and  Stone Nettles "Stone" - finished the Swiss Stage 8-2 to advance to the playoffs. They will open the Round of 32 against Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. with the winner meeting the winner of Fisher-Northeastern later that evening in the Round of 16.

In Super Smash. Bros. Ultimate, Bellevue's Josiah Ellwein "VC" picked up his first win in the NECC Smash Ultimate Singles tournament. He downed Buena Vista's "Victory" 3-0 to improve to 1-1 in the competition.
