Bruins host successful Brawlhalla Collegiate Homecoming Tournament

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- On Saturday, Aug. 26 the Bellevue University esports team hosted the first-ever collegiate Brawlhalla tournament. The Collegiate Homecoming event drew competitors from 48 colleges and universities from across the country.

Bellevue has one athlete compete, "VC" Josiah Ellwein, who placed 17th in the 49-competitor field. He defeated "ban" and "Rage" to reach the third round of the tournament before falling to the University of Pittsburgh's "Java" who was the #1-ranked played in the bracket and is ranked #7 in all of North America. "VC" finished 2-2 on the day.

hopes to see three gamers compete during the next tournament in September with two being seasoned "Brawlhalla" players.

With a stated goal of getting 30 teams to registers, the sign-up period saw 73 colleges attempt to gain entry and, after verification, 49 were allowed to compete. Coach David Castillo-Ferrin hailed the event as a success with significant viewership via the live stream and considerable support on social media.

The next Brawlhalla Homecoming Tournament will take place on Saturday, Sept. 16. Inquiries regarding sign-up for that event have already begun with 27 colleges registered thus far.

Up next for the esports program, the Apex Legends team begins competition in the AVGL with a Wednesday, Aug. 30 match beginning at 6 p.m.
