V-Hawks deal Bruins 6-1 loss in regular season finale

OMAHA, Neb. -- After waiting out a two-hour rain delay, Viterbo University defeated the No. 15 Bellevue University baseball team 6-1 in the regular-season finale for both squads.

Bellevue wraps up the regular season with a 36-12 overall record and 21-2 mark in NSAA play. Viterbo closes out the regular season at 11-36 (10-13 NSAA).

The Bruins will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's NSAA Tournament, hosted by Dickinson State University. BU will face the winner of the No. 4 Viterbo-No. 5 Waldorf game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Right-handed Brandon Jaenke (4-7) struck out 11 Bruin batters in eight innings of three-hit baseball. The only run he allowed came on a leadoff home run by Steven Elsner in the bottom of the season.

After Elsner staked the Bruins to a 1-0 lead, Jaenke settled in by allowing just two more hits and only one more leadoff batter to reach.

His offense picked him up with single runs in each of the next four innings to give the V-Hawks a 4-1 advantage.

Garrett Heying provided a pair of emphatic insurance runs with a two-run home run down the left field line in the seventh.

Takumi Maeno and Elijah Bear each added singles on the afternoon.

Gavin Wuschke (5-2) took the loss for the Bruins.

The scheduled second game of the double header was canceled earlier in the afternoon as a result of persistent storms in the Omaha-area.
