SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Diego Trujillo's ninth-inning single gave Briar Cliff University a walk-off win over the No. 7-ranked Bellevue University baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Field.
The win in the series finale saw Briar Cliff avoid a sweep and improve to 5-4 on the year. Bellevue drops a game under .500, falling to 6-7.
The Chargers loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs. Cam Riemer drew a walk to tie the game ahead of Diego Trujillo's game-winning single to right.
Trujillo delivered a two-run double in the first to open the scoring before coming around on Cade Marquardt's base hit as the Chargers raced out to a 3-0 lead against Bruin starter Gavin Wuschke.
Bellevue got a run back on an error in the second before tying things up in the third. Steven Elsner doubled home a run and Tyler Monroe chased in Elsner with a ground ball.
Kyler Steinborn kept the game tied into the sixth for BCU before the Bruins received back-to-back run-scoring singles from Tradd Richardson and pinch-hitter Alec Ackerman to take a 5-3 lead.
Briar Cliff tied things up in the home half off reliever Jayden Vinson with a sac fly from Easton Cone and an RBI single by Damon Schmid.
Bellevue manufactured a run to take the lead in the eighth. Scott Hansen led off with a base hit and advanced to second on a ground ball by Richardson. After Hansen stole third, CJ Townsend executed a squeeze play to chase him home.
Five Bruins saw action on the mound, with Parker McMan and Teron Williams each posting scoreless appearances.
Cade Herrmann (0-1), who came on for the ninth, took the loss without recording an out.
Bellevue hits the road next week for a seven-game swing through the State of Florida. The trip begins with a three-game series against St. Thomas University, Saturday-Monday, Mar. 2-4.
