Bruins and Comets split first two games of series

NSAA Standings

OMAHA, Neb. -- Behind an 18-hit effort, the No. 7 Bellevue University baseball team defeated Mayville State University 13-4 to open the conference series before seeing their win streak halted at 15 with a 6-5 setback in game two.

Bellevue now stands at 36-9 overall and 20-1 in NSAA play while Mayville State is 15-18 overall and 12-10 in league action.

Game One: BU 13, MSU 4

Kanta Kobayashi went 3-for-5 with a trio of extra base hits and six RBI to lead an offensive barrage which saw the Bruins score 13 runs on 18 hits.

Carson Lundmark's solo shot and a two-run home from Jared McCorrister in the first and third, respectively, staked the Comets to an early 3-0 lead.

Bruin starter Alexandro Celiceo (5-1) settled in from there to work eight solid innings, allowing four runs on six hits, and striking out nine.

Bellevue erased that advantage with a five-run fourth which featured back-to-back solo shots by Brenton Davis and Alex Stufft, an RBI-single by Zach Diehl, and a two-run double by Kobayashi.

Two innings later, Kobayashi stretched the BU lead to 8-3 with an opposite field three-run shot.

McCorrister singled home a run in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly erased as BU piled on five more runs with three RBI-doubles from Josh Vaughan, Kobayashi, and Conner Barnett as well as a run-scoring single by Andrew Ishii and a sac fly by Ackerman.

Bailey Link came on in the ninth for Celiceo and worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to preserve the win.

Adam Senden (2-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work while striking out five.

Game Two: MSU 6, BU 5

Bellevue managed just three hits in game two with second inning home runs by Brenton Davis and Josh Vaughan accounting for three of their five runs. A fourth inning single by Alex Stufft was the lone other Bruin hit.

Mayville jumped on the board with a three-run homer off the bat of Adam Senden in the first.

After BU tied things in the second, the Comets retook the lead in the third when Jared McCorrister singled home Carson Lundmark.

Bellevue tied the game on Stufft's single and took a 5-4 lead when Andrew Ishii chased in a run with a ground ball in the fourth.

Lundmark put MSU back on top with a no-doubter in the fifth and the Comets did not allow another baserunner from there.

Braxton Greenberg (3-2) claimed the win after allowing five runs on three hits and issuing three walks. He struck out seven.

Elijah Johnson (9-2) took the loss despite his eighth 10-plus strikeout game of the season. He allowed six runs on seven hits.
