Bruins split again with Mayville in Day 2 of series

OMAHA, Neb. -- For the second-straight day, the Bellevue University baseball team settled for a doubleheader split with visiting Mayville State University in North Star Athletic Association action at Brown Park Saturday afternoon. 

Bellevue shut out the Comets, 5-0 in the opener before falling in the nightcap, 8-3. 

With the split, the Bruins moved to 19-10 on the season and 2-2 in the NSAA. MSU is now 13-8 overall and 2-2 in league play. 

The Bruins will host Morningside College on Tuesday, March 30, in a single nine-inning non-conference contest at Roddy Field in Bellevue.

Game 1: Bellevue 5, Mayville State 0

The Bruins used a five-run fifth inning and the stellar pitching of Charlie Patterson and Graham Cahill en route to the 5-0 shutout in the opener. 

After a scoreless first four innings, the Bruins erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double to center field by Cody Banks, an RBI double to right field by Cade Sakamoto, and another RBI double to right field by Rigo Duarte

Patterson and Cahill gave up a combined four hits in nine innings of shutout baseball. Patterson improved to 4-0 after allowing three hits with four walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Cahill allowed just one hit with one walk and a pair of strikeouts in the final two innings.   

Game 2: Mayville State 8, Bellevue 3

The Comets raced out to an 8-0 lead over the first five frames before the Bruin offense could get going as MSU earned the split with the 8-3 victory in the nightcap. 

MSU got off to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk to Marcus Wohl and a two-run single by Marcus Hughes. 

The Comets made it 4-0 in the top of the third on an RBI single to center field by Gunner Garpestad. 

Run-scoring singles by Anthony Villanuev and Theo May along with an RBI double to right field by Jared McCorrister pushed the margin to 7-0 in the top of the fourth. 

MSU made it 8-0 in the top of the fifth with a ground-out RBI to third base by Hughes. 

The Bruins got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Nic Metcalf to slice the margin to 8-1. 

Andrew Isshii's solo home run to left field and a ground-out RBI by Alec Lee in the bottom of the sixth, made the final 8-3. 

Matthew Johnston (3-1) earned the win for MSU, scattering two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings on the mound. 

Bailey Link (2-1) was tagged with the loss, after giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
