Bellevue downs Dickinson State, 5-3

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team scored a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings as the Bruins baseball team defeated Dickinson State University 5-3 on Friday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at John Stella Field at Brown Park.

With the win Bellevue improves to 24-19 (10-4 NSAA) while Dickinson drops to 2-23 (1-14 NSAA) with their sixth-straight loss.

Bellevue's scheduled game against Mayville State was not played as the Comets were forced to leave Omaha early to alleviate travel concerns.

Bellevue 5, Dickinson State 3

The Blue Hawks struck first when Karson Hanosky singled home Karson Sweeney on a first-and-third situation in the in the second.

Bellevue tied the game up in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single off the bat of Matt Evans.

The teams traded two-spots in the fifth. Dickinson State scored on a two-run base hit from Will Quito before BU responded with runs from a Riley Baasch single and a JT Patterson ground out.

With the score tied in the seventh Patterson came up with Baasch on third and a base hit through the right side put Bellevue ahead for the first time in the ball game.

BU added a run in the eighth on a fielding error to push the lead to 5-3.

Jarrod Molnaa improved to 3-0 with four shutout innings in relief of starter Stephen Knapp. Molnaa struck out four and issued just one walk to go along with two hits.

Gabe Lizarraga (0-5) pitched well enough to keep Dickinson State in the game but took the loss after giving up 5 runs on 12 hits in 7.1 innings of work.
