BU Baseball pulls away from Midland for 6-2 win

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- After opening the season with 18 games away from home the Bellevue University baseball team played their home-opener at Don Roddy Field where they defeated Midland University on Wednesday evening by a score of 6-2.

Bellevue improves to 8-11 with the victory while Midland fell to 12-9 with the loss.

Riley Baasch led the offensive efforts for the Bruins finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI on the evening. Kory Longaker and Jonah Yang also recorded two-hit games for Bellevue.

BU struck first on a long home run from JT Patterson in the second inning.

Midland bounced back with a two-run third inning, getting an RBI-groundout from Bailey Bliss and an RBI-double from Buddy Balsino.

Baasch tied the game in the fourth when he singled home Patterson.

Jonah Yang gave Bellevue the lead back when he singled home Brandon Sparks in the fifth.

BU pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts on the evening. Starter Stephen Knapp retired four via the K in four solid innings of work, allowing just a pair of unearned runs on four hits.

Dylan Thorp (2-2) earned the win in relief, striking out seven and allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings. Max Dwyer came on to work a perfect ninth and picked up the last two strikeouts.

Baasch put the game out of reach with his three home run, a three-run shot down the left field line, in the eighth to push the BU lead to 6-2.

Dakota Cortese (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Warriors surrendering two runs on four hits and a pair of walks in three innings.

Schedule changes have altered this weekend's series with York. The Bruins will travel for a double-header on Saturday at York's Levitt Stadium and host the Panthers at Don Roddy Field on Sunday. Action is set for 1 p.m. both days.
