LAKE WALES, Fla. -- Bellevue scored a season-high 11 runs in the opener to down Mount Vernon Nazarene (9-7) by an 11-3 score before falling to Thomas (13-14) by a 3-2 score on Friday at the Warner Invitational.
The Bruins are now 6-10 on the year and next play tomorrow in a placement game. An opponent and game time will be announced later today.
Game One: Bellevue 11, Mount Vernon Nazarene 3
Bellevue matched their season-high in runs as they overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Mount Vernon Nazarene University 11-3 in the third game of the Warner Invitational.
Jonah Yang went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the BU offensive charge. The Bruins racked up 10 hits as a team for the second-straight game; it was the third time this season recording double figure hits.
MVNU jumped on the board with a pair of first inning runs but the Bruins halved the lead with a sac fly from Diego Iribarren in the second and tied the game with an RBI-groundout from Kory Longaker. BU went ahead on two-run double by Yang later in the inning.
After the Cougars got a run back in the fifth, Bellevue scored twice in the home half with an RBI-double from Austin Alexander and a wild pitch that scored Brandon Sparks.
Bellevue put the game away with a five-run sixth capped by Stuart Eurich's two-run double.
Dylan Thorp (1-2) threw five strong innings allowing just two earned runs on six hits to earn the victory. Max Dwyer came on to earn his third save of the year with two scoreless innings of relief.
Game Two: Thomas 3, Bellevue 2
Thomas scored first and never trailed as the Nighthawks eked out a 3-2 nail-biter against Bellevue in the final pool play game of the Warner Invitational.
Taylor Westbrook gave Thomas an early lead with a first inning single that plated Chase Hinson.
Levi Hollingsworth made it 2-0 when he doubled in Gavin Murphy in the fourth.
Bellevue got immediately got a run back when Travis Tanaka singled home Matt Evans in the fifth. But the Nighthawks quickly re-established their two-run lead with a run in the home half.
The Bruins saw each of their first two hitters reach in the sixth and again managed to push across a run to cut the lead to 3-2.
Evans led off the seventh with a double and pinch-runner Brandon Salmon advanced to third on Kory Longaker's sac bunt. With the throw late to get Salmon, BU had runners on the corners with no outs but were unable to capitalize and Thomas earned the win.
Brandon Desjardins (0-1) took the loss on the hill but allowed just three runs on seven hits in a complete game effort.
Daniel Williams (3-3) earned the victory for Thomas, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and striking out five over seven innings of work.
