BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- The third-ranked Bellevue University baseball team was swept Saturday on the road at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, losing by scores of 4-1 and 5-0. The Eagles took all three games of the series after downing BU on Friday, 5-4.
Bellevue fell to 6-4 on the season with the two losses. OKWU improved to 15-2 overall.
The Bruins will be idle until next Saturday, March 4, when they travel to Babson Park, Fla. for a noon doubleheader at Webber International University.
Game 1: Oklahoma Wesleyan 4, Bellevue 1
The Eagles used a pair of home runs and held BU to six singles as OKWU registered the 4-1 win in the opener.
OKWU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to center field by Mikey Ortega. A solo homer by Will Price extended the Eagle advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bruins trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth on Derik Bontempo's one-run single to left that scored Joe Moran from second.
OKWU pushed the margin to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer to center field by Trevor Achenbach.
Bellevue threatened in the top of the ninth with two runners on and two outs and the tying run at the plate. However, OKWU ended the game when reliever Tyler Shumpert struck out Hunter Robson to record his seventh save of the season.
Todd Nicks (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Blake Randazzo (4-0) collected the win, scattering five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings on the mound.
Game 2: Oklahoma Wesleyan 5, Bellevue?
Eagle starter Carlos Aldana held the Bruins to just two hits as OKWU completed the sweep with the 2-0 win in the nightcap.
The Eagles grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a solo homer to left field by Alejandro Hernandez in the bottom of the first.
Will Price's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth pushed the OKWU lead to 3-0 and the Eagles made it 5-0 following a two-run bases-loaded fielding error in the same inning.
Hunter Robson and Brandon Salmon were the only two Bruins to manage hits in the contest.
Colten Barnes suffered the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season after allowing four hits with two walks in 4.1 innings of work.
Carlos Aldana (2-1) picked up the win, striking out five and walking three while allowing just two singles in the contest.
