Bruins dominate major awards on all-MCAC baseball team

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- The Bellevue University baseball team dominated the major awards on the 2015 all-Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball team and four Bruins were named to the first team in an announcement made today in conjunction with the MCAC Baseball Tournament being held on the campus of Oklahoma Wesleyan University. 

Osvaldo Gonzalez was named the MCAC Player of the Year and right-handed pitchers Steve Sarcone and Stephan Meyer shared MCAC Pitcher of the Year honors. In addition, Gonzalez and third baseman Tyler Blood were named to the MCAC Gold Glove team. 

Joining Gonzalez, Sarcone, and Meyer on the first team was junior outfielder Colton Nash. The Bruins landed seven players on the second team: senior catcher Aaron Brasher, junior second baseman Ross Feeley, junior short stop Kevin Rodriguez, junior outfielder Gabriel De La Rosa, junior outfielder Trevor Jones, senior right-handed pitcher Sean McManus, and Blood at third base. 

In addition, the following athletes were named to the 2015 MCAC Baseball Scholar-Athlete team: junior Aaron Bain, junior Braulio Torres-Perez, junior Connor Garrison, redshirt freshman Dan Greco, Feeley and Meyer. 

Gonzalez currently leads the Bruins with a .431 batting average, 28 doubles, 13 home runs, and 55 RBIs. He was named the NAIA National Player of the Week on April 7 and has twice been named the MCAC Player of the Week. His 28 doubles currently leads the nation. He ranks in top 10 nationally in five statistical categories and has not committed a fielding error while splitting time with Brasher at catcher. 

Sarcone, who earned second team honors in 2014, is tied with Meyer with nine wins and leads the team with 102 strikeouts while maintaining a 1.77 ERA. He recorded a career-high 17 strikeouts in a complete-game 7-0 shutout win over Waldorf on April 24. 

Meyer (9-2) has a team-leading 1.58 ERA and is second on the squad with 88 strikeouts. He earned MCAC Pitcher of the Week honors on March 30 and has recorded three shutouts on the season. 

Nash is currently batting .331 and is second on the team with 22 doubles, nine home runs and 51 RBIs. He recorded grand slams in three consecutive games in early March on the Bruins' Florida spring trip. 

Bellevue (42-12) will face Oklahoma Wesleyan (44-10) at 3:30 p.m. today in a winner's bracket contest at the 2015 MCAC Baseball Tournament
