ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Junior Tony Monroy, making his first start of the season, was spectacular in leading the No. 14 Bellevue University baseball team to a 5-1 non-conference victory over Northwestern College on Monday afternoon. Bellevue improves to 32-7 on the year while Northwestern dips to 15-20 with the loss.
Monroy, a junior right-hander, threw seven strong innings striking out six and allowing one run while scattering four hits and a pair of walks to record his first victory and improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Trevor Jones scored from third on a double-play ball by Colton Nash. A sacrifice fly to center field by Tyler Blood scored Gabriel De La Rosa to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage in the second.
Consecutive doubles by Osvaldo Gonzalez and Nash and a ground-out RBI by Blood gave BU a 4-0 margin in the top of the third frame.
A solo homer by Todd Nicks expanded the Bruin lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth.
Northwestern scratched out a run in the bottom of the eighth when Skyler Wheeler drove home Reed Smith with a two-out bases loaded single off reliever Marcco Lovato.
Kevin Rodriguez worked a perfect ninth, striking out two, to preserve the victory for the purple and gold.
Bellevue will host No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University in a key four-game conference series at Roddy Field (Bellevue East HS) this Friday-Saturday, April 10-11. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and Saturday's twinbill will commence at noon.
