Bruins shut down York, 14-0, 2-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 15th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team shut down visiting York College, 14-0 and 2-1, Friday afternoon in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Westgate Field. 

The Bruins improved to 25-6 on the season and 5-1 in the MCAC after the sweep. York fell to 18-12 overall and 6-3 in league play. 

The two teams will meet on Saturday (March 28) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Westgate Field

Game 1: Bellevue 14, York 0

Steve Sarcone registered a complete-game five-hit shutout and the Bruins pounded out 17 hits en route to the 14-0 win in the opener. 

Trevor Jones went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the BU offense. Jones, Ross Feeley, Osvaldo Gonzalez, Gabriel De La Rosa, Aaron Brasher, and Dan Greco all drove in a pair of runs. 

Gonzalez drove in Jones with an RBI single and De La Rosa's double to deep center field brought home Colton Nash to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Bruins batted through the lineup in the third, erupting for seven runs on seven hits as five different players drove in runs in the inning, highlighted by Greco's two-run double down the left field line. 

Kevin Rodriguez, Feeley, and Jones all drove in runs with RBI singles in the fourth to increase the lead to 12-0.

Sacrifice fly balls by Jones and Rodee Anderson pushed the BU advantage to 14-0 in the bottom of the sixth. 

Sarcone improved to 5-1 on the season, scattering five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Game 2: Bellevue 2, York 1

Nash and Greco both drove in runs as the Bruins held on for the 2-1 victory in the nightcap. 

Bellevue took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Greco drove in De La Rosa with an RBI single up the middle after De La Rosa led off the inning with a double to right field.

A sacrifice fly to right field by Nash gave BU a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the third frame. 

The Panthers scored their first run of the day on an RBI single by Garrett Anctil in the top of the sixth to slice the lead to 2-1.

York threatened again in the top of the seventh with runners on the corners and two outs, but Leland Tilley recorded his team-leading fifth save of the season after striking out Rudy Perez to preserve the victory. 

Braulio Torres-Perez picked up the win, improving to 4-2 on the season, allowing just two hits with four walks and five strikeouts in five innings on the mound.
