No. 21 Bruins breeze past CBC, 10-3, 12-2

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 21st-ranked Bellevue University baseball team defeated Central Baptist College by scores of 10-3 and 12-2 Thursday in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Westgate Field.

Bellevue extended its winning streak to 10 as they improved to 32-13-2 and 16-6 in conference action. Central Baptist fell to 29-20 overall and 11-11 in the MCAC.

The Bruins will conclude their series with CBC tomorrow with a noon doubleheader on senior day.

Bellevue 10, Central Baptist 3

Aaron Brasher went 5-for-5 and Tyler Blood added four hits to propel Bellevue to a 10-3 win in the opener.

The Bruins outhit CBC by an 18-5 margin. Six BU runs came with two outs as the Bruins registered 13 two-out hits in the game.

Four-straight two-out BU hits, highlighted by RBI singles by Nate Mullins and Bryce Kelly, gave the Bruins a 2-0 edge in the first inning.

The Mustangs evened the contest at 2-2 following a wild pitch and Bruin fielding error in the top half of the second.

BU responded with a pair of runs to regain the lead, 4-2, in the bottom half of the stanza, scoring on Galli Cribbs' RBI fielder's choice groundout to second base and a CBC throwing error by starting pitcher Josh Fortner.

The Bruins scored four runs, all with two outs, in the fourth to extend its advantage to 8-2. Kelly and Brasher notched RBI singles and Devin Ferguson registered a two-run double.

A sacrifice fly by Cribbs in the seventh and BU scored again in the eighth inning on an error for an eight-run lead, 10-2.

The Mustangs added a ninth inning run to make the final score, 10-3.

Ricky Holm improved to 8-1 with four strikeouts in eight complete innings on the mound. He gave up just four hits in the start.

Fortner (2-5) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 14 hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.

Bellevue 12, Central Baptist 2

The Bruins scored runs in five innings, including a six-run first, to complete the doubleheader sweep, 12-2.

Charlie Krueger went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs to lead an offensive attack that recorded 12 hits, including four extra-base hits.

BU raced out to a quick 6-0 lead in the home half of the first and took advantage of a pair of CBC errors. Ferguson and Mullins tallied RBIs while Brasher hit a two-run double.

Krueger notched his second RBI of the game with a run-scoring single in the second as the Bruins took a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs scored its first run of the game on Ross Westbrook's third inning single. BU responded in the bottom half of the stanza on Blood's sacrifice fly to give BU an 8-1 lead.

The Bruins extended their lead to 11-1 following a three-run home run over the right field fence by Krueger. The Omaha, Neb. native leads the team with eight homers this season.

Two Bruin errors in the top of the fifth allowed CBC to score its second run to make the score 11-2.

Joe Mancuso tallied an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth for the Bruins' final run of the game.

Brennan Henry earned his seventh win and struck out nine Mustangs in the complete game.

Zach Sparks (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season and lasted just two-thirds on an inning. He gave up six runs, but only one was earned.
