Bruins complete 4-game series sweep over Winnipeg, 11-2, 5-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 19th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team completed a four-game series sweep over the University of Winnipeg with a pair of non-conference wins Saturday afternoon at Westgate Field. The Bruins took the twinbill by scores of 11-2 and 5-1.

Bellevue improved 26-13-2 with the two victories. Winnipeg fell to 1-24 on the season. 

Zack Clark went 5-for-7 on the day and Kyle Kinman and Charlie Krueger each drove in five runs in the twinbill. Kinman picked up the victory in the opener and Steve Sarcone got the complete-game win in the nightcap.

The Bruins will host Benedictine College on Sunday (April 13) in a single nine-inning non-conference contest beginning at 1 p.m. at Westgate Field. 

Game 1: Bellevue 11, Winnipeg 2

Krueger went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double, and a home run to pace the BU offense to the 11-2 victory in the opener. Clark also collected three hits and Joe Mancuso finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and an RBI.

A two-run double to left center field by Krueger gave the Bruins an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. 

The Wesmen tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second on RBI singles by Matt Smith and Jarrett Hogue.

Mancuso led off the bottom of the second with a triple to deep right field and was driven in by Frank Haskett with an RBI single to left as the Bruins regained the lead at 3-2. 

The Bruins exploded for seven runs in the third on a three-run homer by Kyle Kinman, a two-run shot to right field by Krueger and RBI doubles by Bryce Kelly and Mancuso as BU extended the lead to 10-2. 

A sacrifice fly to left field by Haskett extended the Bruin lead to 11-2 in the bottom of the fourth.

Kinman (6-2) picked up the victory, allowing three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Brent Dunn (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings on the mound. 

Game 2: Bellevue 5, Winnipeg 1

The Bruins used four runs in the third inning to propel them to the 5-1 victory in the nightcap. Kinman drove in two runs and Clark went 2-for-3 to lead BU at the plate. 

The Wesmen grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI double down the right field line by Paul Esteves.

The Bruins responded in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on three hits and a Wesmen throwing error. Galli Cribbs, Kinman, and Krueger all drove in runs in the inning. 

A sacrifice fly to right field by Kinman pushed the BU margin to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Sarcone (3-3) earned the complete-game win, tossing a four-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk to garner his third win of the season.
