No. 17 Bruins split four-game MCAC series at York

YORK, Neb. -- For the second-straight day, Bellevue University and York College split its baseball doubleheader Sunday at Levitt Stadium in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Bruins took the opener, 7-4, before York earned a 4-3 victory in the four-game series finale.

Bellevue, ranked No. 17 in the NAIA, is now 22-12-2 and 10-6 in conference play while York moved its record to 22-13 overall and 8-4 in the MCAC.

The BU baseball team will travel to Sioux City, Iowa on Tuesday, April 8 for a single nine-inning nonconference game at Morningside College (13-18, 2-4 GPAC) at 4:00 p.m.

Bellevue 7, York 4

Despite being outhit 7-4, the Bruins managed to take the opener, 7-4. The Panthers were plagued by five errors in the contest.

The Bruins scored four runs on two hits and and took advantage of a wild pitch, hit batsmen and two errors by YC to take a four-run lead in the third. Galli Cribbs recorded an RBI single while Kyle Kinman blasted a three-run home run over the right field fence.

Tyler Helms and Sean Goodell both hit RBI doubles to trim the Panthers' deficit down to 4-3 in the home half of the third.

Charlie Krueger led the fourth inning off with a walk and came around to score on Devin Ferguson's double to give BU a two-run lead, 5-3.

The Panthers once again answered back with a run of their own, using a double by Jordan Pella to pull within one, 5-4, after four complete innings.

Levi Cartas drew a bases loaded walk to extend the Bruins' lead to 6-4 in the fifth.

Krueger put BU on top by three, 7-4, with a solo home run to begin the eighth inning.

Kinman, who finished with three RBIs at the plate, struck out 12 batters in eight innings on the mound as he improved to 5-2. Despite hitting a batter and giving up two hits, Steve Sarcone earned the save.

Josh Knoll fell to 4-4 on the season and gave up six runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of work. Only one run was earned.

York 4, Bellevue 3

The Panthers scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to escape with a 4-3 win in the second game.

YC took the lead in the second after a wild pitch by Bruin starting pitcher Brennan Henry.

Bryce Kelly singled and pinch runner Frank Haskett scored after a YC error to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth.

The Panthers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Knoll notched a run-scoring single and YC took advantage of a BU error, balk, passed ball, bases-loaded walk and two hit batters.

Trevor Ramos hit a solo home run to open up the bottom of the sixth and take a 4-1 advantage.

Cartas singled and Devin Ferguson followed with a two-run home run in the seventh to pull the Bruins within one run, 4-3, but Panther pitcher Brad Lindsley recorded two strikeouts and forced a groundout to earn his third win of the season.

Henry (4-2) took the loss and gave up four runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

The two teams combined to make seven errors in the game.
