Oklahoma Wesleyan sweeps Bruins in top 20 showdown

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- No. 16 Oklahoma Wesleyan University defeated 10th-ranked Bellevue University 4-3 and 9-0 in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Doenges Memorial Stadium.

Oklahoma Wesleyan improved to 30-6 and 7-1 in the MCAC while Bellevue fell to 19-10-2 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

After dropping the first game, the Eagles won the final three in the weekend conference series that featured two top 20 teams.

The Bruins will play a single nine-inning nonconference contest against Morningside College (11-13) on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at Westgate Field.

Oklahoma Wesleyan 4, Bellevue 3

Oklahoma Wesleyan scored the game-winning run on a Bruin fielding error to take the opener, 4-3.

The Bruins scored the first run of the game on Galli Cribbs single that scored Bryce Kelly in the third inning.

OKWU scored three runs on three hits and took advantage of a Bruin balk, error and hit batsmen to take a 3-1 lead in the fourth. The Eagles used a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly for their three runs scored in the inning.

Kyle Kinman hit a double that scored Tyler Blood, who led the frame off with a single, to pull the Bruins within one in the top of the fifth.

BU tied the game on Charlie Krueger's RBI groundout in the sixth.

The Bruins committed two errors which led to an OKWU walk-off win in the ninth.

CJ Gregory (3-2) picked up the win in relief. Starter Zach Hendrix finished with a no-decision after recording five strikeouts in eight complete innings on the mound.

Kinman (4-2) took the loss despite limiting the Eagles to only six hits and struck out nine in 8.2 innings of work.

The Bruins and Eagles both committed three errors in the game.

Oklahoma Wesleyan 9, Bellevue 0

The Eagles scored four runs in the second and fifth innings to propel them to a 9-0 win in the four-game series finale.

OKWU scored its first run on an RBI groundout in the opening frame.

The first five Eagle batters reached base and OKWU took advantage of two errors, a hit batter and a passed ball to take a five-run lead in the second inning.

The Eagles recorded two singles and two doubles to extend their lead to 9-0 in the home half of the fifth.

Juan Berumen (4-1) earned his fourth win of the season and tallied four strikeouts and held the Bruins to just four hits in seven complete innings.

Making his first start of the season, Steve Sarcone (1-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in two innings.

The Eagles outhit BU by a 10-4 margin and tallied three doubles.
