Bruins split key doubleheader at OKWU

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- The 10th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team split a pair of key league games Friday at No. 16 Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Doenges Memorial Stadium.

Bellevue collected a 9-3 win in the opener before being shut out, 6-0, in the nightcap.

The Bruins moved to 19-8-2 on the season and 8-2 in the MCAC. Oklahoma Wesleyan is 28-6 overall and 5-1 in league play.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday (March 29).

Game 1: Bellevue 9, Oklahoma Wesleyan 3

The Bruins scored runs in the first four innings and outhit OKWU by seven en route to a 9-3 win in the series opener.

Aaron Brasher, Zack Clark, Kyle Kinman and Charlie Krueger each had multi-hit games and combined for six RBIs to lead the offense that finished with 14 hits.

A two-run double to right field by Krueger gave the Bruins an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. The Bruins surrendered a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Cody Riley as the Eagles trimmed the lead to 2-1.

BU added a pair of runs in the second on a two-run triple by Kinman, pushing the Bruin lead to 4-1.

Two hit batsmen and a passed ball helped OKWU slim the margin to 4-2 in the bottom of the second.

The Bruins pushed the lead to 7-2 in the third, scoring three runs, highlighted by a two-run double to center field by Tyler Blood.

The Eagles used an RBI single by Trae Bobo in the home half of the third to cut BU's lead down to four.

BU scored its eighth run of the contest on Brasher's two-out single in the top of the fourth to give the Bruins an 8-3 advantage.

Back-to-back doubles by Kinman and Galli Cribbs to begin the eighth inning extended BU's lead to 9-3.

Ricky Holm picked up his fourth win of the year after striking out eight batters in eight complete innings to improve to 4-1.

Diego Ibarra, the NAIA leader in wins, suffered his first loss of the season and dropped to 7-1. He gave up eight runs, two earned, on 12 hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Eagles were plagued by five errors, two wild pitches and left 11 runners on base.

Game 2: Oklahoma Wesleyan 6, Bellevue 0

Despite outhitting the Eagles, 7-5, Bellevue suffered a 6-0 loss in the nightcap. The Bruins left 10 runners stranded and committed 11 walks, two errors, two wild pitches and a balk in the loss.

Kinman was the only Bruin to register multiple hits in the contest, finishing 2-for-4 with a double.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Avery Flores scored on a balk from Bruin starter Brennan Henry.

After a walk, stolen base and wild pitch, Asa Manship scored on a groundout RBI by Jeff Butler and Flores scored on an RBI single by Cody Riley, giving OKWU a 3-0 lead in the second frame.

A two-run single by Brice McCulloch and a bases-loaded walk extended the Eagle lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Henry (4-1) suffered the loss, scattering four hits, with nine walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings on the mound.

Sam Haynes (3-1) recorded the complete game shutout victory, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out four Bruins in seven innings of work.
