Bruins earn split at No. 7 Sterling

STERLING, Kan. --  The 14th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team earned a doubleheader split at seventh-ranked Sterling College Saturday, rallying for a 6-3 win in the opener before falling 5-4 in the nightcap at Warrior Field. BU took two of three games in the weekend series. 

Bellevue is now 2-5 on the season. Sterling moved to 9-4 overall. 

The Bruins, who play their next 10 games in Florida, will return to action on March 1 when they play a doubleheader at Webber International University (9-7). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CST at Babson Park.

Bellevue 6, Sterling 3

The Bruins scored four runs in the ninth inning en route to a 6-3 comeback win in the opener.

Kyle Kinman and Galli Cribbs combined for five RBIs to lead BU offensively.

Kinman hit a solo home run in the first inning before registering an RBI double in the third to give BU a 2-0 advantage.

The Warriors scored their first run of the game with an RBI single by Anthony Stewart in the bottom of the fourth.

SC added runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a one-run lead, 3-2.

BU stormed back with four runs on three hits in the final inning, fueled by Cribbs' three-run triple. Aaron Brasher added an RBIgroundout to complete the scoring.

Sean Felt (1-0) picked up the win, recording three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Starting pitcher Ricky Holm notched 11 strikeouts in the no-decision.

Matt Jackson (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs out of the bullpen for SC.

Sterling 5, Bellevue 4

Nate Mullins went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs, but it wasn't enough as Sterling scored a late run to pull out the 5-4 win in the nightcap. 

Sterling scored four runs in the bottom of the third on four hits, highlighted by two-run singles from Anthony Stewart and Ricky Rodriguez. 

The Bruins got one run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Mullins to cut the deficit to 4-1. 

Bellevue tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth on a ground-out RBI by Aaron Brasher and a two-run homer from Mullins. 

The Warriors responded with an RBI single by Luke Miller in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead, 5-4.

The Bruins threatened in the top of the seventh when Devin Ferguson reached on an error and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt from Bryce Kelly and a ground out by Zach Clark. Sterling preserved the win after forcing Kinman to fly out to left field to end the game. 

Leland Tilley (0-1) suffered the loss after entering the game in the top of the seventh, surrendering the go-ahead run. Blake Oliver (2-0) earned the complete-game win, scattering five hits while striking out four Bruins and giving up four earned runs.
