BU opens NSAA play with four-set win over Trojans

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Allie Kerns and Kealy Kiviniemi combined for 31 kills to lead the 12th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-11, 25-22, 15-25, 25-16) victory over (RV) Dakota State University Wednesday night as the Bruins opened North Star Athletic Association action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

With the win, the Bruins improved to 12-1 on the season and 1-0 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 7-7 on the season and 0-1 in league play. 

Kerns finished with a match-high 16 kills while hitting .231 and adding three blocks. 

Kiviniemi hit .279 while producing 15 kills, five digs, and three blocks. Haley Fleischman and Sidney Sledge chipped in with eight kills apiece in the win. 

Taylan Keefer (22) and Eve Fountain (18) combined for 40 digs, and the Bruins held a 9-6 advantage in blocks, holding the Trojans to a .132 hitting percentage in the match. 

Mila Aiwohi (34) and Jada Nunn (23) combined for 57 assists while directing the BU offense to a .210 attacking clip. 

Sydney Schell paced the Trojans with a double-double, finishing with 15 kills and ten digs.  

Up Next

The Bruins will head to Ottawa, Kan., this Friday-Saturday, Sept. 15-16, to compete in the Ottawa University Invitational. BU will take on Hastings College at 2 p.m. on Friday. Bellevue will conclude the tournament on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Kansas Wesleyan University and a 5 p.m. battle with MidAmerica Nazarene University.
