Bruins storm back for 5-set win over Blue Hawks

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 15th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to record a dramatic five-set win over visiting Dickinson State University Saturday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association play at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. The Bruins won by a final score of 18-25, 15-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-8. 

With the win, the Bruins have now won six-straight matches, improving to 21-6 on the season and 9-1 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 4-19 overall and 2-8 in league play. 

Olivia Galas led the Bruins with her third triple-double of the season, finishing with 40 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs, to go along with three blocks. 

Allie Kerns led the BU offense with 14 kills. She also added eight digs and three service aces. Sierra Athen finished with 12 kills, nine digs, and a pair of blocks. 

Raeanne Kimoto guided the BU defense with 12 digs. 

The Blue Hawks, who out-hit BU .213 to .153, were led by Mackenna Johnson's 18 kills and six blocks. Haydin Henschel added 11 kills, five digs, and two blocks. Bailey Pearcy dished out 44 assists and added seven digs, three service aces, and two kills. 

DSU hit .393 in the opening frame and followed that up with a .448 performance in the second to cruise to the 2-0 lead. 

The Bruins never trailed in the third set, racing out to a 7-1 lead, before cruising to the 25-18 win. 

BU led 24-17 in the fourth before the Blue Hawks used a 6-0 run to pull to within one point at 24-23. A kill by Kerns gave the Bruins the set at 25-23, forcing a decisive fifth set. 

Bellevue hit a blistering .467 in the fifth frame, committing just one attacking error. The Bruins used a 7-1 run highlighted by a pair of kills from Nicole Meyer and a block by Meyer and Athen, to take a commanding 10-3 lead. The two teams traded points the remainder of the fifth before a kill by Galas gave the Bruins the match with the 15-8 victory.  

The Bruins will travel to Aberdeen, S.D., next Friday, Oct. 28, for a 7 p.m. match at Presentation College.
