Athen, Galas set school records in sweep over Waldorf

FOREST CITY, Iowa -- Senior All-Americans Sierra Athen and Olivia Galas both set school records on Saturday as the Bruins swept Waldorf University 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-19) in North Star Athletic Association action at Hanson Fieldhouse. 

Athen became the school's all-time leader in kills following her 14th kill of the match at 23-18 in the third set. Athen led the Bruins with 15 kills on .370 hitting while adding eight digs, two service aces, and a pair of blocks. Athen now has 1,751 career kills, surpassing Brenda Quinn, who recorded 1,749 kills during her 1997-2000 playing career.

Beginning midway through the second set, Athen finished the remainder of the match with 10 kills on 15 errorless swings. 

With her 23rd assist of the match, Galas became the program's career leader in assists. She finished the match with 35 assists and now has 6,160 career assists, surpassing Candace Clow, who tallied 6,146 assists in her 2005-08 BU career. Galas broke the school record on Athen's kill at 22-19 in the second frame.

Galas added five digs and five kills in the victory. 

Galas directed the BU offense to a sizzling .421 hitting efficiency. The Bruin defense, led by Taylan Keefer's seven digs, held the Warriors to a .178 attack percentage. 

Sidney Sledge hit .500 in the win, finishing with seven kills on 12 swings. Jacki Apel and Allie Kerns produced six kills apiece as every BU attacker hit above .300 in the match. 

Kenzie Kidd paced the Warriors with eight kills and a pair of digs. Abigail Wood collected six kills on .455 hitting and Kaitlyn Bakke dished out 23 assists and added three digs.   

The Bruins will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, next Friday, Oct. 14, to participate in the Grand View Classic. BU will battle Rocky Mountain at 1 p.m. and host Grand View at 7 p.m.
