BU takes over sole possession of second with sweep over VCSU

VALLEY CITY, N.D. -- The eighth-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team took over sole possession of second place in the North Star Athletic Association standings with a convincing 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-12) sweep at Valley City State University Friday night at Graichen Gymnasium. 

With the win, the Bruins improved to 18-5 on the season and 8-2 in the NSAA. VCSU fell to 11-14 overall and 6-3 in league play. 

Freshman outside hitter Eve Fountain led the Bruins with 14 kills and 10 digs for her team-leading 15th double-double of the season. 

Freshman middle blocker Haley Fleischman blasted nine kills on .429 hitting while adding two blocks and a pair of digs. 

Junior setter Olivia Galas registered a double-double with 29 assists and a season-high 16 digs while pounding five kills on .400 hitting. 

Junior outside hitter Sierra Athen collected a season-high four service aces along with four kills and eight digs. 

Defensively, the Bruins were paced by Taylan Keefer's 21 digs. She also added a season-high seven assists in the victory. 

The Vikings were led by Bailey Nelson's 11 kills on .292 hitting. Katie Juarez finished with seven kills and 12 digs. 

Bellevue outhit the Vikings, .250 to .167, and held a 71-57 advantage in digs. 

The Bruins will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 27 when they host No. 23-ranked Doane University in a non-conference contest beginning at 7 p.m. in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
