Second-ranked Viterbo hands BU four-set loss

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Second-ranked Viterbo University ran its winning streak to 18 matches with a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19) victory over No. 8-ranked Bellevue University Friday night in North Star Athletic Association action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

The match, which was a battle between the top two teams in the conference, moved the V-Hawks to 25-1 on the season and 7-0 in the NSAA. Bellevue dropped to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in league play. 

Sierra Athen (13) and Eve Fountain (12) combined for 25 kills lead the BU offense in the loss. Athen added eight digs and three blocks. 

Fountain recorded her team-leading 11th double-double of the season by adding 21 digs along with three blocks and a service ace. 

Nicole Meyer came off the bench to produce five kills on .364 hitting while adding a match-high five blocks. 

Taylan Keefer finished with 20 digs and four assists. 

Olivia Galas dished out 41 assists and registered seven digs, four kills, two blocks, and a service ace. Her seven digs helped her eclipse the 1,000-dig mark for her career. She now has 1,001 career digs. 

BU, which dug itself into holes in every set, was plagued by 30 attacking errors, 13 service errors, and three service errors.  

The V-Hawk offense was balanced with Kenzie Winker leading the way with 11 kills and nine digs. Miah Garant and Maya Roberts finished with 10 kills apiece. Roberts also produced five blocks while Garant added four blocks. 

Adrianna Reinhard anchored the VU defense with 17 digs. Lauryn Sobasky (24) and Abbey Johnson (23) combined for 47 assists while directing the V-Hawk offense. 

The Bruins will host Waldorf University tomorrow (Oct. 9) for a 12:30 p.m. NSAA matchup at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. The Bruins' two seniors, Payton Fehringer and Jorie Lincoln will be honored following the match.
