Bruins sweep No. 10 Argos; Fall in 5 to OUAZ

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- For the fourth time this season, the 12th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball defeated a top 10 opponent after sweeping 10th-ranked University of Providence (25-23, 25-22, 25-23). The Bruins, however, suffered their first loss of the season to host Ottawa (Ariz.) University, falling in five sets 25-18, 25-13, 19-25, 16-25, 17-19. 

The Bruins moved to 7-1 on the season with the split.   

Bellevue will travel to Prescott, Ariz. on Saturday, Sept. 11, for a 12:30 p.m. (MT) match at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. 

Bellevue 3, Providence 0

Outside hitters Sierra Athen (15) and Eve Fountain (11) combined for 26 kills as BU overcame deficits in all three games to defeat the Argos in three straight sets. 

Athen led BU with 15 kills and five digs. Fountain notched a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs.  

Olivia Galas directed the BU offense to a .195 hitting percentage while collecting 33 assists, seven kills, and a block.   

UP was paced by Sadie Lott's 11 kills, five digs, and four blocks as the Argos suffered just their second loss of the season. 

OUAZ 3, Bellevue 2

The Bruins squandered a 2-0 lead before falling in dramatic fashion, saving seven match points and finally succumbing, 19-17, in the deciding fifth frame. 

Athen led BU with 17 kills and seven digs. Fountain recorded her second double-double of the day with 16 kills and 21 digs along with two service aces and a pair of blocks. 

Galas finished with 49 assists, eight digs, five kills, and three blocks. 

Sienna Black came off the bench to register nine kills on .286 hitting while adding two blocks. 

The Spirit were led by Livia De Pra's 19 kills and 14 digs. Kate Pestova added 14 kills, eight digs and a block. 

Cristal Carrizoza dished out 43 assists while collecting 19 digs and seven kills. 

Trailing 14-10 in the fifth set, the Bruins battled back scoring four straight points sparked by two kills from Athen and another from Fountain. 

A kill by De Pra gave OUAZ their fifth match point before Black tied the game at 15-15 with a kill in the middle. 

An attack error by Jacki Apel and a kill from Athen made it 16 apiece. 

A block by Galas and Haley Fleischmann gave BU its first match point at 17-16. 

A kill by De Pra and another from Pestova gave the Spirit its seventh match point at 18-17. A service ace by De Pra ended the match.
