NSAA Release

LaCROSSE, Wis. -- Four Bruins were honored Thursday with all-North Star Athletic Association volleyball honors announced in conjunction with the 2018 NSAA Volleyball Tournament Banquet hosted by Viterbo University.

Earning first-team honors were senior rightside hitter Shayla Scanlan, freshman setter Olivia Galas, and freshman libero Madi Evans. Galas also earned NSAA Newcomer of the Year and NSAA Freshman of the Year accolades. It marked the first time in school history that a Bruin has picked up two major NSAA awards in the same season.

In addition, sophomore outside hitter Andrea Carson garnered second-team honors and senior defensive specialist Fabiola Aviles was Bellevue's recipient of the Champions of Character Award.

Scanlan, who is a four-time first-team all-conference selection, earned NSAA Attacker of the Week honors twice this season. She leads this year's team with 101 total blocks. Scanlan is third on the squad with 323 kills and second with a .263 hitting percentage. Her attack percentage ranks fifth in the latest conference statistics.

Galas is a six-time NSAA Setter of the Week pick and ranks fifth nationally with 1,322 total assists and 10.93 assists per game. She has recorded a team-leading 11 double-doubles on the season. Galas, who is third on the team with 273 digs, was named the NAIA National Setter of the Week on Oct. 2 after averaging 14.43 assists per set while adding 14 digs to go along with eight kills in BU's wins over Mayville State and Presentation.

Evans leads the Bruins with 580 digs this season. She is second on the squad with 93 set assists and tied for third with 17 service aces. Evans, who earned NSAA Defender of the Week honors on Oct. 22, ranks 15th in school history with her 580 digs this season. She recorded a career-high 35 digs in BU's five-set win at Mayville State on Oct. 19.

Carson is currently second on the team with 347 kills, while also adding 116 digs and 22 total blocks. She pocketed a career-high 25 kills in BU's four-set win over Mayville State on Sept. 28. Carson has registered double-figure kill totals in 18 matches this season.

The No. 2-seeded Bruins (23-10, 11-3 NSAA) will take on the winner between No. 3 Dakota State and No. 6 Dickinson State at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 in the NSAA Tournament semifinals. The winner of the conference tournament will receive an automatic berth into the NAIA National Tournament.
