BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Two Bellevue University volleyball student-athletes and a BU assistant coach were recognized on the NAIA All-North Central Region Team that was announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association.
Sophomore setter Maddie Squiers (Kearney, Neb.) and junior right side Shayla Scanlan (Plattsmouth, Neb.) earned distinction as first team all-Region selections while assistant coach Steve Field was recognized as the Region's Assistant Coach of the Year.
The North Central Region is composed of member schools in the North Star Athletic Association and the NAIA Association of Independent Institutions.
Squiers earns first team honors for the second time in her career after also earning regional Freshman of the Year honors in 2016. This season Squiers ranks second in the NAIA in assists (1,564), 15th in service aces (62), and 20th in assists per game (10.57). Her setting has directed the Bruins to a team hitting percentage of .206 for the season. Additionally, she ranks second on the team with 408 digs (2.76 per game) on the year.
For Scanlan this is her third selection on the all-Region team. She previously earned selections in both 2016 and 2015, taking home Regional Freshman of the Year honors in 2015 as well. She ranks 12th nationally with 470 kills and leads the Bruin hitters with both 3.18 kills per game and a .289 hitting percentage. Her 101 total blocks place her second on the team.
Field, who was also named NAIA National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016, earns the regional accolade for the second-straight season. Field is in his ninth season on the volleyball staff, in addition to his duties as the department's Sports Information Director. His primary focuses are training setters and middles while assisting in all facets of practice planning and implementation, scouting, video breakdown, and recruiting.
The Bruins are currently 29-11 on the season and will next compete during the Pool Play round of the NAIA National Tournament at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa from Nov. 28-30.
