BU falls to Evangel, Culver-Stockton at Labor Day Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. - The Bellevue University volleyball team fell to 0-8 on the season with a pair of four-set losses Saturday at the Bruin Labor Day Classic held at the Lied Activity Center. BU fell to Evangel University 3-1 (19-25, 27-25, 24-26, 20-25) before ending the tournament with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-14) loss to Culver Stockton College.

The Bruins will travel to Fremont, Neb. on Wednesday, Sept. 3 for a 7 p.m. match at No. 7-ranked Midland University. 

Junior setter Beth Walker registered duble-doubles in both matches. 

Evangel 3, Bellevue 1

Freshman outside hitters Gracie Myers and Rachel Wald combined for 25 kills in the four-set loss to Evangel, while Walker collected a double-double with 41 assists and 16 digs, to go along with six kills.    

Myers finished with 13 kills on .310 hitting and added a block. Wald tallied 12 kills, six digs and three service aces.

Evangel outhit the Bruins .186 to .141, but the Bruins had a 75-62 advantage in digs. Taylor Holz' tied Walker with a match-high 16 digs.

Micah Guiot paced EU with 12 kills and three blocks. Haley Watson added 11 kills, three blocks and three digs.                

Culver Stockton 3, Bellevue 1

Sophomore rightside hitter LaJaida Even had a career-high 12 kills on .529 hitting to pace the Bruins in loss to Culver Stockton. Wald recorded nine kills, four digs and a service ace. 

Walker recorded her second double-double of the day, finishing with 32 assists and 11 digs, along with three kills and a pair of blocks. 

After cruising to the 25-13 first-set win after hitting .393, the Bruins cooled off the final three games, finishing with a .169 hitting percentage, including a .000 hitting clip in the final set. 

CSC was led by Kamrin Gold's 13 kills, 19 digs, and eight service aces. The Wildcats finished the match with 15 service aces, compared to just four for the Bruins.
