Bruins fall to CSU-San Marcos, No. 8 Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team fell to 0-4 on the season after being swept on Friday by Cal State-San Marcos and No. 8 Biola University at the Biola University Summer Slam.

Bellevue lost to CSU-SM, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) before being swept by Biola 25-23, 25-7, 25-14 in the final match of the tournament. 

The Bruins return to action next weekend when they host the 19-team Bellevue University Labor Day Classic on Aug. 29-30 at the Lied Center on Fort Crook Road and Hwy 370 in Bellevue. 

Cal State-San Marcos 3, Bellevue 0

Faulkner led the Bruins with 13 kills and three blocks in the 3-0 loss the Cal State-San Marcos. She was the lone BU player to record double figures in kills.

Beth Walker registered 29 assists, seven digs, three kills and a block in the loss. Defensively, the Bruins were paced by Taylor Holz' 11 digs.

Gracie Myers had five kills on six swings in the opening set. The Bruins led 2-1 after Faulkner's kill, but that was the last BU lead as the Cougars used a 9-2 run to grab the advantage before holding on for the 25-21 victory.

The Bruins hit just .036 in the second set with 10 hitting errors as CSU-SM cruised to the 25-16 victory. 

Faulkner connected on four kills in the third stanza and BU improved with a .345 hitting clip, but the Cougars used six service aces and 15 digs to complete the sweep with the 25-18 win. 

The Bruins were outhit .286 to .179 in the match, but held a 36-34 advantage in digs. 

Jordan Banich led CSUSM with 10 kills and eight digs. 

Biola 3, Bellevue 0

The Bruins battled through the first set before falling to the eighth-ranked Eagles, 25-23, 25-7, 25-12 in the tournament finale. 

Rachel Wald led the Bruins with six kills and a service ace. Walker dished out 18 assists, while adding seven digs and a kill. 

Faulkner added five kills and a block. 

Holz anchored the BU defense with a match-high 10 digs. 

Joceyln Kirton led the Eagles with 15 kills on .619 hitting. All-American Amy Weststeyn provided 10 kills, six digs and a pair of blocks.
